'Wired' Scanners must be physically attached to hardware via a desktop computer, laptop computer, computer terminal or an instrument.

'Wireless' Scanners do not need to be physically attached to a computer.  Connection may be provided by a base station  or a communications cradle that is wired to hardware.  The scanner communicates via a radio transceiver built in to the scanner and the base station.  Data is then transmitted to the hardware from the base station.  Wireless scanners communicate to the base station or direct to the computer hardware using Wifi or bluetooth technology wireless scanners can transmit live up to 100 meters.  Suitable applications are retailing, transportation and distribution logistics, parcel and postal delivery, healthcare and manufacturing.

'Omni' directional scanners are very popular due to having 20-25 scan lines, instead of a single line.  They provide major benefits in reading performance that guarantees the highest first pass decoding rate.  As such they are capable of improving high volume scanning areas such as retail point of sale or circulation desks in libraries etc.

'Fixed Mount' Scanning is suitable for Low Speed conveyor systems with vastly different package dimensions and complex sortation requirements with varying barcode label positioning.  Fixed mount scanning can be easily used for Time & Attendance systems they have a tough outer shell which make them more tamper proof than other scanners.   Fixed Mount Scanners and controllers range from raster units that scan at 1200 scans per second at a range of 250mm, through to holographic scanners with up to 5 focal planes, range of over 2 metres and a scan width of nearly 1.5 metres.  These single or tunnel configurations can be used on conveyors running at 3 metres per second.

'2D' imagers have the ability to read very small 2D barcodes. Suitable for DNA laboratories, Microbiology, Cytology and almost any other application.  A 2D barcode can hold up to 60 characters of information making this a great way to store lots of information in a small space.
