From a strong base in the healthcare industry, Barcode Direct expanded to offer its barcoding expertise and broad product range to other industry verticals who need to record and track assets – including federal and state government departments, local councils, libraries, police, NGOs, schools, universities, TAFE colleges, retailers wholesalers and telecoms.

THE TEAM

My business story started when I trained as a nurse and worked in hospitals in the US and Australia. Whilst I enjoyed my time in healthcare, I realised that my passion was for sales and I joined the IT industry. It was then that I saw the link between the two disciplines, and how technology could deliver efficiency and better patient outcomes. That’s when I founded Barcode Direct, starting with healthcare and expanding out to a range of industries who use technology for the efficient tracking of their assets.

I love the business and the community of staff and clients that we have- my team are 100% committed to helping our clients and our clients have responded with loyalty and their continued support of our business.  My primary role is to engage with industry to continue to build the business - I believe this is my strength and I love the challenges and rewards it brings.

HEALTHCARE

Nowhere is barcoding more valuable than in Healthcare.
Hospitals, pathology labs and pharmacies face the challenge of tracking thousands of items of inventory every day - including medications, equipment and samples - knowing that the slightest error could mean a significant difference in patient outcome.
It is essential that they correctly identify patients, to ensure that the treatment is delivered to the correct person.

Barcodes are crucial to the smooth, efficient and safe running of healthcare facilities, enabling:

• Patient validation – patient wristbands are used to ensure that the right patient is being given the right treatment and medications.  
• Equipment tracking – barcodes help to track equipment, ensuring that the right items are available when needed, that stock levels are monitored for re-ordering, and that surgical instruments are all accounted for after operating on a patient.
• Tracking of samples – it is essential that tissue and blood samples are linked to the correct patient and that identification is not compromised by the conditions (e.g. chemicals, temperature, storage time) which may be a necessary part of the analysis process.

RETAIL

Retail relies heavily on barcode technology to track goods throughout the supply chain lifecycle and to ensure swift and efficient customer transactions. Manufacturers provide each product/variation of a product (size, colour etc) with a unique barcode identifier, which the retailer uses for ordering, warehousing, pricing, stocking and checkout.

Whilst 1D barcodes simply provide a unique number for the retailer’s own use, 2D barcodes contain significantly more information and are designed to be used by the consumer.  They give the manufacturer and retailer the opportunity to provide information in formats such as images, sound, and website links and are a marketing as well as a logistics tool.  

The use of RFID technology is growing in retail – unlike barcodes, RFID tags do not need ‘line of sight’ to be read, and multiple tags (100s) can be read simultaneously (whereas barcodes need to be scanned sequentially). Cost has traditionally been the inhibitor to using RFID on high volume, low value items, but as cost reduces, usage is expanding.

EDUCATION

Educational institutions, from schools, to TAFE colleges to Universities need to provide a safe environment for students and staff. Technology plays a key part, with barcodes, magnetic stripes and RFID being used for identification and access control systems.

• Technical support – many issues can be resolved with telephone support, so if an item is not performing as it should be, your first port of call is to ring us on 1300 656 135.  Ideally, have the serial number of the item to hand, so that we can check warranty status.  For those issues that can’t be resolved by phone, you can return the item to us for evaluation and repair by a technician.
