ABOUT

Barcode Direct is the leading supplier of barcoding technology, expertise and advice to the healthcare industry in Australia, supplying labels and equipment to 80% of hospitals and private pathology labs throughout Australia and is the major supplier of patient identification wrist bands to Australian Hospitals.

From a strong base in the healthcare industry, Barcode Direct expanded to offer its barcoding expertise and broad product range to other industry verticals who need to record and track assets – including federal and state government departments, local councils, libraries, police, NGOs, schools, universities, TAFE colleges, retailers wholesalers and telecoms.

The common thread is the need for expertise and the best products for printing barcodes, labelling goods and scanning, to ensure efficient operation of their business or organisation. These clients rely on Barcode Direct as the leading authority on barcodes in Australia.

Barcode Direct was founded in 1995 by Maggie Mason. Maggie’s experience in the health sector and also working for leading IT manufacturers made it clear to her that there was a need in the market for someone to pull together the different components needed for effective use of barcode technology - and so Barcode Direct was born.

She is recognised as a highly successful business owner, and was interviewed by leading business author Dale Beaumont, for his book ‘Secrets of Small Business Owners Exposed’.

Maggie prides herself on having built the best possible team, and company values based on excellence in customer service, job satisfaction for employees, and respect for clients and suppliers.

THE TEAM

Maggie Mason FOUNDER/ OWNER/ MANAGING DIRECTOR

Maggie Mason
FOUNDER/ OWNER/ MANAGING DIRECTOR

My business story started when I trained as a nurse and worked in hospitals in the US and Australia. Whilst I enjoyed my time in healthcare, I realised that my passion was for sales and I joined the IT industry. It was then that I saw the link between the two disciplines, and how technology could deliver efficiency and better patient outcomes. That’s when I founded Barcode Direct, starting with healthcare and expanding out to a range of industries who use technology for the efficient tracking of their assets.

I love the business and the community of staff and clients that we have- my team are 100% committed to helping our clients and our clients have responded with loyalty and their continued support of our business.  My primary role is to engage with industry to continue to build the business - I believe this is my strength and I love the challenges and rewards it brings.

INDUSTRIES

HEALTHCARE

Nowhere is barcoding more valuable than in Healthcare.
Hospitals, pathology labs and pharmacies face the challenge of tracking thousands of items of inventory every day - including medications, equipment and samples - knowing that the slightest error could mean a significant difference in patient outcome.
It is essential that they correctly identify patients, to ensure that the treatment is delivered to the correct person.

Barcodes are crucial to the smooth, efficient and safe running of healthcare facilities, enabling:

  • Patient validation – patient wristbands are used to ensure that the right patient is being given the right treatment and medications.
  • Equipment tracking – barcodes help to track equipment, ensuring that the right items are available when needed, that stock levels are monitored for re-ordering, and that surgical instruments are all accounted for after operating on a patient.
  • Tracking of samples – it is essential that tissue and blood samples are linked to the correct patient and that identification is not compromised by the conditions (e.g. chemicals, temperature, storage time) which may be a necessary part of the analysis process.

RETAIL

Retail relies heavily on barcode technology to track goods throughout the supply chain lifecycle and to ensure swift and efficient customer transactions. Manufacturers provide each product/variation of a product (size, colour etc) with a unique barcode identifier, which the retailer uses for ordering, warehousing, pricing, stocking and checkout.

Whilst 1D barcodes simply provide a unique number for the retailer’s own use, 2D barcodes contain significantly more information and are designed to be used by the consumer.  They give the manufacturer and retailer the opportunity to provide information in formats such as images, sound, and website links and are a marketing as well as a logistics tool.

The use of RFID technology is growing in retail – unlike barcodes, RFID tags do not need ‘line of sight’ to be read, and multiple tags (100s) can be read simultaneously (whereas barcodes need to be scanned sequentially). Cost has traditionally been the inhibitor to using RFID on high volume, low value items, but as cost reduces, usage is expanding.

EDUCATION

Educational institutions, from schools, to TAFE colleges to Universities need to provide a safe environment for students and staff. Technology plays a key part, with barcodes, magnetic stripes and RFID being used for identification and access control systems.
Educational assets of all types – from books to classroom furniture to equipment - deliver student valuable and need to be protected and shared. Barcode technology helps to identify and track these assets, ensuring they are available when students and staff need them.

NON-GOVERNMENT ORGANISATIONS (NGOs)

The supply of blood and related products for use in emergency situations is one of the core services of NGOs such as the Red Cross.
It is crucial that supply is 100% secure and safe, that supply is moved to where it is needed efficiently, that global standards are applied and that operations are financially sustainable.

Global standard barcodes are used to identify, and track all blood products, along with labelling technology that can withstand the conditions encountered during testing, transportation and delivery to the field.

GOVERNMENT

Government organisations – federal, local, city councils, police, and libraries – manage vast quantities of assets and documents which are essential to providing the service that citizens need and expect. Barcoding technology helps:

  • Police forces to track evidence inventory quickly and securely
  • Libraries to manage the books, DVDs and toys that enhance citizens’ lives
  • Government to deliver efficient rate notice scanning, document and file tracking, asset tracking & management
